Dr. Thomas J Griffin

Dr. Griffin completed his orthodontic residency at the University of North Carolina in 1994 simultaneously earning a Masters of Science degree. He has been in private practice in Cary since February of 1995. Dr. Griffin is a Diplomat of the American Board of Orthodontists and an active member of the American Association of Orthodontists, the American Dental Association, and the Wake County Dental Society.

Dr. Griffin attained his Doctorate of Dental Surgery degree from Northwestern University in 1986 and completed a postgraduate residency in hospital dentistry at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. Following that Dr. Griffin completed a head and neck cancer fellowship at the University of Chicago funded by the American Cancer Society in 1987. That university then hired him as a clinical instructor in the department of surgery and eventually as director of the general practice residency program. The hours were horrendous and with two young daughters and a wife that he saw sparingly Dr. Griffin reconsidered other avenues for his career. Orthodontics was a perfect fit for the balance of family life and career challenge that he desired. Gaining acceptance to the University of North Carolina program fulfilled his new start and introduced the family to a state and community they have grown to love.

Dr. Griffin also maintains a separate business that promotes and sells his popular paintings of Christmas and winter scenes. His annual production of a Christmas card, usually pertaining to snowmen, which he sends to patients, friends and family, has become an office tradition. Dr. Griffin and his wife, Elizabeth, are blessed with three healthy children: Randi age 20, Kelly age 18, and Joshua age 14. The older two are division I college hockey players and Josh plays locally. Hockey has been a family obsession since the Carolina Hurricanes blew into the region; they remain ardent fans. Dr. Griffin is also a lifelong Chicago Cub fan which proves he is a creature of delayed satisfaction, a virtue for an orthodontist!

When not at the office, at an ice rink, or behind an easel – which is almost never – Dr. Griffin can be found fishing for just about anything that will bite.
